Crosby Garrett 2 Day Trail Ride
About this Trail Ride
Our Crosby Garrett Trail Ride is a wonderful 2 Day circular trail ride which includes lots of fast canters along the green lanes of Crosby Garrett fell, the Smardale Valley and Kirkby Stephen common. This holiday includes 2 days riding approx 5 hours per day with a picnic stop midway, packed lunches and one nights B&B in a single room sharing one of our lovely farmhouses at Stonetrail with your fellow riders. It is possible to extend your holiday with additional nights accommodation and an additional ride on the third morning.
Meet at Stonetrail at 9am to meet the team, pack your saddle bag, study the map and prepare to set off around 10am. From our gate we head straight onto the bridleway to the picture postcard village of Ravenstonedale using a mixture of bridlepaths & quiet lanes. By lunchtime we will reach Crosby Garrett fell where we will have a picnic stop to enjoy the endless views across to the Orton Fells and Lakeland hills beyond. The afternoon is spent riding across the wide open common of Crosby Garret where we pick up the pace to enjoy some fabulous canters along the green lanes. Its 360 glorious views all the way on this route with big skies in every direction. After an afternoon riding the glorious green lanes across the common admiring the fine views we finally descend into Crosby Garrett where our horses will graze overnight. Everyone helps to untack, groom, feed and turn out their horse before a short journey back to Stonetrail. The evening is a relaxed affair and usually spent in one of our local inns. We have a choice of several lovely local places to eat, one of which is within walking distance.
On day two we return to the horses and catch, feed, groom and tack up ready for a return journey to Stonetrail. This morning our route takes us along the bridlepaths across the stunningly beautiful Smardale Valley, managed by English Nature, where we can admire the impressive 19th century Smardale Viaduct, now a walking trail on the opposite side of the Gill. Lunch is another picnic stop beside the charming Smardale Bridge, a fine surviving example of an 18th century grade II listed packhorse bridge. Parts of our route also include sections of the Coast to Coast walking route and we enjoy the occasional meet up of walkers who at this point will be mid- way on their on 190 mile journey, it’s the moment we feel extra pleased to be on horseback. Our journey continues after lunch riding pretty bridlepaths between stone walls and a final canter across Ash Fell to finish.
