Stonetrail is situated in south east Cumbria in the Eden Valley, a landscape so special it has now been included within the Yorkshire Dales National Park. This is a place where you can still ride for several hours across glorious open fell and hardly see a soul.
Our rides are very sociable events designed for capable riders with experience of cantering in open spaces. Our aim is to create an experience which is as close as possible to what you would enjoy if you were hacking out on your own horse with friends. If you feel this is an opportunity you would like to experience but are unsure about your ability please get in touch and we arrange a date where we can provide more one to one support.
All rides are guided by Alison, owner of Stonetrail, or Lucy, who each have many years of experience and will ensure you have a fun and safe experience. Our routes include lots of canters along the grassy tops of the fells as well as quiet moments spent riding along beautiful bridleways which follow rivers past fairy tale ruined castles. Many of our routes take us to hidden peaceful valleys, a world away from the hustle and bustle of normal life. The scenary and peace on our journeys is a constant reminder of how lucky we are to ride our horses in such a beautiful and precious landscape.
Throughout the summer we offer rides lasting from 2 hours in duration to a full day. From our gate we have direct access onto the fell leading to a variety of circular routes with plenty of opportunities for some lovey canters and stunning scenary, Our full day rides take us a little further with the added bonus of experiencing the joy of a picnic in a scenic, peacful spot watching your horse graze.
The Pennine Bridleway is a National Trail designed for horse and riders spanning the length of the Pennine hills from Derbyshire to Cumbria. The trail is just 5 minutes from our gate and many of our multi-day trail rides start and finish on this wonderful trail. Within moments of joining the track we are riding gently uphill to enjoy the fine views across the Eden Valley and the Howgill fells. This one hour ride is a gentle pace ideal to escape into the peace and quiet of the fells, perfect if you have not ridden for a while. Please note this ride, although ridden at walk, is not suitable for beginners.
The hillside behind the farm is known as "Stennerskeugh Clouds", part of Ravenstonedale common, a peaceful place with a criss cross of green tracks winding their way up and over the hillside with glorious views across the Eden Valley, and on a fine day, even the Lakeland fells. The hillside is home to a breeding herd of fell ponies who graze freely on the fell with their newborn foals. Everyone loves the ride on the cloud, it a special peaceful place where we enjoy the views as much as the lovely canters.
Stonetrail is surrounded by glorious green fells with rounded grass tops which makes them perfect for exploring on horseback. Ash fell is one our favourites rides because as well as the incredible views from the top we enjoy a few wonderful canters along the top of the fell.
Ravenstonedale is a picture postcard village which we include midway on our half day ride around Harter Fell. This lovely ride includes a remote packhorse trail through the Howgill fells which hugs the hillside of Harter fell with glorious views of Wandale Fell. This is a varied paced ride with shorter canters and a pleasant mix of remote bridlepaths, quiet country lanes and a clip clop through the village.
Heading east from Stonetrail is the beautiful Mallerstang Valley where the River Eden flows from its source high up on the hillside and south towards the Solway Firth. This route begins with a ride across us Kirkby Stephen common to meet the River Eden as its winds its way around past the ruined castles of lammerside and Pendragon. Plenty of lovely canters on this ride and a scenic picnic stop beside the river.
All our rides include canters, usually uphill, which requires the rider to be well balanced in a light seat. Riders must have experience of this type of riding. We always tailor the ride to suit the level of experience on the day as we know some riders prefer shorter, steady canters and some riders prefer a longer, faster pace. We will ask you about this when you first visit. If you are new to cantering, or have not ridden for a while please contact Alison by phone to discuss arranging a ride on one of our dates listed as "On Request".
Stonetrail is unable to accommodate beginners or riders under the age of 12. To ensure the quality of experience the maximum number of riders on each ride is limited to six.
